Isomeric xylene mixture, commonly referred to as mixed xylene, is a blend composed of paraxylene, orthoxylene, metaxylene, and ethylbenzene. It is a colorless, transparent, volatile liquid with an aromatic odor, primarily produced through petroleum catalytic reforming or steam cracking processes. It is one of the highest-volume aromatic hydrocarbon products in the petrochemical industry.

In the chemical industry, the core value of mixed xylene lies in its excellent solubility and its role as a chemical raw material.

As a highly effective solvent, it has strong dissolving power for oil-based resins, alkyd resins, acrylic resins, and various natural oils, with a moderate evaporation rate. Therefore, it serves as an indispensable diluent and modifier in industries such as coatings, paints, inks, and adhesives, where it improves leveling, controls drying speed, and enhances film formation quality. Its applications are particularly extensive in automotive refinish paints, industrial anti-corrosion coatings, and wood finishes.

As a chemical raw material, mixed xylene is an important source for the separation and purification of various monomers. Through isomer separation, paraxylene (PX), orthoxylene (OX), and metaxylene (MX) can be obtained. Among these, paraxylene is the core raw material for producing purified terephthalic acid (PTA), which is further used in the manufacture of polyester fibers and plastic bottles. Orthoxylene is used to produce phthalic anhydride, a key precursor for plasticizers. Metaxylene is used in the synthesis of isophthalic acid, as well as in fine chemicals such as pesticides and dyes.

It is important to note that mixed xylene is flammable, and prolonged exposure may have certain effects on the human central nervous system. Proper ventilation and protection should be ensured during use, and exposure to ignition sources should be avoided. With the continued growth of downstream industries such as polyester and coatings, the market demand for mixed xylene remains steadily robust.
