Toluene, with the chemical formula C₇H₈, is a colorless, volatile liquid with a distinctive aromatic odor. It is widely found in crude oil and gasoline and is primarily produced through catalytic reforming or steam cracking in petroleum refining. It is one of the most widely produced and extensively used basic aromatic hydrocarbons in the chemical industry.

In the chemical sector, toluene plays a dual role:

First, it serves as a high-performance organic solvent. Toluene has excellent dissolving power for resins, rubbers, oils, and many other substances, with a moderate evaporation rate. It is a key component in the production of paints, coatings, inks, adhesives, and cleaning agents, where it is used to adjust viscosity and improve leveling, ensuring high-quality surface finishes.

Second, it acts as an important chemical intermediate. Through chemical conversion, toluene can be used to produce a range of high-value derivatives, such as benzoic acid, benzaldehyde, and toluene diisocyanate (TDI). Among these, TDI is a core raw material for polyurethane flexible foam, widely used in furniture, automotive seating, and insulation materials. Benzoic acid is used as a food preservative and a plasticizer for resins. Additionally, toluene is a blending component in gasoline, helping to improve octane ratings.

It is important to note that toluene is flammable and has certain toxicity. Long-term exposure can cause damage to the human nervous system. Therefore, strict safety protocols—including enclosed operations and proper ventilation—must be followed during its production and use. With the advancement of green chemistry, the efficient utilization of toluene and the development of safer alternatives are becoming key areas of focus in the industry.
