Paraformaldehyde: A Core Raw Material in Composite Panel Production
Paraformaldehyde is an efficient solid polymer of formaldehyde, with the chemical formula (CH₂O)ₙ. It can be understood as a "solid warehouse" of high-purity formaldehyde. Typically appearing as a white powder or granules, it has a high active ingredient content (up to 91%-97%) and is safer and more cost-effective to transport and store than traditional formaldehyde aqueous solutions.
In the production of composite panels, paraformaldehyde plays a critical role as a key raw material, primarily used in the synthesis of urea-formaldehyde resins, phenolic resins, and melamine-modified resins, which are wood adhesives. Urea-formaldehyde resin is the most widely used adhesive in the global production of engineered wood products such as plywood, particleboard, and medium-density fiberboard, and paraformaldehyde is one of its core raw materials.
Using paraformaldehyde to produce wood adhesives offers significant advantages. First, as it releases formaldehyde precisely during the reaction, it facilitates the synthesis of high-solid-content and structurally stable eco-friendly adhesives while effectively controlling the free formaldehyde emission of the finished panels. Second, when paraformaldehyde participates in co-polycondensation reactions, it increases the degree of polymerization and crosslinking of the resin, thereby enhancing the bonding strength and water resistance of the composite panels. Additionally, phenolic resins synthesized with paraformaldehyde can impart excellent flame retardancy and antistatic properties to composite boards.
Therefore, paraformaldehyde is not only key to achieving strong adhesion in composite panels but also an important guarantee for improving their environmental performance and physical properties.
